Employee Spotlight – Sharon Thomas
Meet Sharon Thomas!
Sharon has been with EVERFI EdComs for 3 years. She started out as a Tour Administrator and has climbed the ladder since then. Sharon is now a Senior Logistics and Project Tour Manager.
What is your role & how long have you been at EdComs?
I have worked at EVERFI EdComs since 2017. My role is the Senior Logistics and Project Tour Manager in the Live Team, which involves working face to face directly with clients, colleagues and professionals from across the world. My role has involved logistics in terms of both national and international events. I love it.
What is your favorite thing about working at EdComs?
The diverse range of professionals I get to work with and the opportunity to work on multiple projects at the same time. No one day is the same, and I love the challenges and problem solving that I get the chance to find solutions for on a daily basis. I find that in my department (the Live Team) we have some of the most interesting and enjoyable projects, which makes me feel like I’m learning something all the time – and there is always a chance to get directly stuck in! For example, some of my projects have ranged from working with the RSPCA (an animal charity) on a farm in Norfolk with young children to educate them about animal welfare, to an international NFL Summer Bowl Tournament and taking the successful team to Florida for the final! It’s ace.
How has your career grown since starting at the company?
I initially started as a Tour Administrator, planning, organising and recruiting school tours but I realised straight away that the role had so much potential for me to evolve and progress myself. Over time and with the help and support of director of Live Events & Training, Rob Kitson and my colleagues, I was promoted to Logistics and Events Manager, which meant I was responsible for managing and planning larger events as well as schools tours – and detailing the logistics, looking after the facilitators and creating my own schedules to ensure we could hit some exceptional success rates for our clients, facilitators, our company, but most importantly – the impact we had on students in schools (or events) wherever we went. In January 2020, I was promoted to Senior Logistics and Project Tour Manager. This is where I took on a role in terms of managing tours on a larger scale. I had a team of recruiters and took responsibility for making sure freelancers and our facilitators were confident and supported in training and on the road. I have diversified my role by supporting other teams within the business, sharing knowledge about the best type of schedule for their client, the type of recruitment they can do for maximum impact – as well as the best contacts and a way in which they can maximise resources and minimize the time spent doing it! I am proud that since taking up this role, school cancellations have dropped to zero – through better liaison, enhanced contact and communication, and having an awesome team to work with! Sounds cheesy, but it’s a real feel good role and makes you feel epic every day!
If you could travel anywhere in the world with all of the money in the world, where would you go?
I love travelling – especially to places with different cultures. I previously have lived and taught in Morocco, and love sharing in and learning about different cultures, stories and traditions.
What is one thing you cannot resist?
I cannot resist different types of chocolates and Indian street foods. The small little stalls in streets in Mumbai have some of the tastiest snacks and treats you could ever imagine! Since EdComs became EVERFI EdComs, I have to admit, having some American sweets in the office sometimes is a real highlight! The UK just doesn’t do candy and sweets quite as well as the US!
Where is your favorite place to be?
Anywhere where my friends and family are – that’s my favourite place. My parents live in Scotland, I have a sister who works in Switzerland and other family members across the world. I love being with my family and friends – they are the people who make who I am, so wherever they may be, that’s where I often want to visit!
Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
I’m an adrenaline junkie and I absolutely love rollercoasters – last summer, I went with my friend on a rollercoaster road trip round some American theme parks and had the most awesome time. We drove 2406 miles, went on 289 rides across 7 themes in 21 days! The rides and coasters in the US are some of the best in the world. I really hope to come back and do more!
If you could choose anyone, who would you choose as your mentor?
I have always looked up to my Dad as my true mentor. My sisters too have guided and supported me through every single thing. I am so grateful to them, and they always inspire me to strive to keep going, progress and never say never – there is always a solution!
What are 3 words you would use to describe EdComs?
Inspirational. Innovative. Incredible!
How do you balance your career and personal (life)?
I try to schedule tasks as effectively as possible, focusing on the priorities and most important goals of the day. It is so tempting to keep working because I really enjoy my role and sometimes deadlines are tight, but it is also important to remember that the same excitement and drive will be there the next morning! I do find it tough sometimes to balance this, but I am getting better at it with experience. I think different techniques work for different people for sure!
What’s your favorite indoor/outdoor activity?
I love theme parks and rollercoasters, Halloween horror mazes, murder mysteries, zip wiring and Bollywood dancing.
What is your greatest fear? (and backstory if work appropriate)
Losing the opportunity to do what I love. When I was at school, I never knew the job I do now existed, and I am so pleased I found it, and do it. I put 100% into every task because I feel like I’m giving something back to the community when a student says ‘this has been really helpful’ or a teacher says ‘this has made such a difference’ – those things make my role so rewarding and the team I work with. Oh – and spiders! I’m terrified of those too!
What is your favorite book?
The Famous Five books by Enid Blyton. I used to love these as a child – haven’t read them for years now, but they are so wonderfully written and conjure up such lovely memories.
What gets you most excited to come to work every day?
The chance to genuinely make a difference, every single day. Whatever the task, however stressful – every second is worth it when you can make that difference.
What about EdComs/EVERFI’s mission and or values gets you fired up to come to work?
That sharing knowledge, skills, tips and tricks with students can empower students to get to the next stage. Connecting people to the real world and giving them chances to experience and develop themselves – and it is applicable for everybody. Education is a very powerful tool in every country for every person, forever. And being a part of that is empowering to me in itself and fires me up to come to work and strive for success for our company, our clients and our colleagues no matter what. Through working for EVERFI EdComs, I’ve also picked up new skills and tips that I can use in my everyday life too, which is an extra bonus on top – it has helped me develop my confidence and creativity and collaboration with others, which I think is ultimately the most important part of any company.
