Given their “digital native” status, most middle school students are likely familiar with infographics. These visual shorthand stylings are ever present in our news feeds alongside the memes, gifs, videos and advertisements many of our students already use to communicate. But what your students may not have considered yet is how or why an infographic can be used to share data and information, and what relationships exist between what we’re learning in school and how that translates in the real world.
Infographics: Infographics are simplified representations of complex data aiming to deliver a message in an easily understandable and visually striking way.
Making the STEM or STEAM connection with these tools is easy to do, as infographics easily assist students in bridging a gap between data and artistic literacies. Our students often see these worlds in opposition– is data visualization more technical or more creative? Are you artsy or are you good at math and science? Do I have to be one and how can I be both? Launch: With any infographic, you can begin by sharing examples of infographics that are relevant to your lesson content or your students’ particular interests.
