Manufacturing supports more than 17 million jobs and contributes $2.09 trillion annually to the U.S. economy. Over the next decade, the US will need to fill nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs, and 2 million of those are expected to go unfilled due to the STEM-skills gap.

As technology becomes an increasingly integral part of all industries, technical skills will be an imperative for workers seeking to advance their careers, and a strong background in STEM will be the foundation for opportunity. Yet despite the importance of STEM occupations to the U.S. economy, far too many students across the country still do not have access to high-quality STEM education

To help close the STEM-skills gap, EVERFI has teamed with the Manufacturing Institute to provide a digital STEM education program that introduces our future workforce to careers in modern manufacturing. The Manufacturing Institute shares our commitment to bringing more men and women into modern manufacturing and improving the perception of the industry to engage today’s youth in tomorrow’s modern manufacturing careers.

Closing the STEM Gap – The Student Journey

One key indicator determining high school graduates’ pursuit of a STEM degree is their interest entering high school. In order to STEM literacy and inspire students to remain interested in this vast field, we must provide a curriculum that meets them where they are and shows them where they can go. The Endeavor – STEM Career Exploration course does just that.

The partnership allows manufacturing companies to provide students with engaging activities that reinforces key STEM topics and insights into their skills, interests, and aptitudes that connect to exciting STEM careers.

That’s why every module starts and ends with an activity inspired by real careers. For instance, in a module about the future of manufacturing, students learn about 3D printers and design and prototype their own sneaker. Along the way, students reflect on the skills they’ve gained and the interests they’ve piqued, connecting those to real world careers they can add to their personal portfolio.Their culminating takeaway is a personalized career portfolio with profiles and pathways they’ve encountered throughout their journey.
