As the opioid epidemic roils communities and the popularity of vaping is leading to hospitalizations and even deaths, our nation’s schools are feeling the impact. We want young adults to be healthy and make informed decisions, and that starts with prevention education.
With 1 in 4 high school students reporting they’ve used an e-cigarette in the last 30 days, and 1 in 5 high school seniors reporting that they have misused prescription drugs, reaching students early is more important than ever. National Institute on Drug Abuse experts share information on the expanding and evolving challenges teens are facing when it comes to prescription drug safety and vaping.
Our team sat down with Dr. Ruben Baler, a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) scientist presenting information on the neurobiology of drug use and addiction. Together with Kimberley Timpf, EVERFI’s Sr. Director of Impact & Education, Dr. Baler offers his thoughts on teen brain development, how specific drugs affect the developing teen brain, the impact of drugs on other behaviors like sleep and cyberbullying, and the connection between mental health and substance use disorders.
To close, Brian Marquis, NIDA Public Liaison Officer, spotlights NIDA resources available for Red Ribbon Week and National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week ® (NDAFW).
