EVERFI TESTIFIES DURING EEOC PUBLIC MEETING SHARING BEST PRACTICES IN PREVENTION EDUCATION

EVERFI Selected by EEOC to Share How to Foster Civil, Respectful and Harassment-Free Workplaces

WASHINGTON — (October 31, 2018) Today, EVERFI, Inc. joined the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for a public meeting at the agency headquarters in Washington, D.C. The meeting, entitled “Revamping Workplace Culture to Prevent Harassment,” included testimony from expert witnesses discussing how to foster civil, respectful, and harassment-free workplaces. EVERFI’s Vice President of Prevention Education, Rob Buelow, testified.

“Too often, workplace harassment initiatives focus on how to define and respond to illegal behavior. EVERFI believes that organizations should shift the balance to prioritize prevention–stopping concerning behavior before individuals are harmed,” said Rob Buelow.

EVERFI is a leading provider of online education that addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation’s corporations and educational institutions. EVERFI uses a prevention-based approach to address workplace harassment and other critical social issues. This Fall, EVERFI is launching a new course, Equity, Acceptance, and Respect: Global Harassment & Discrimination Prevention, which goes beyond compliance to focus on strategies to truly prevent harassment in the workplace, including evidence-based best practices like bystander intervention and allyship and integrated climate surveys to drive ongoing impact.

“Telling employees about actions that violate policy places focus on what not to do – behaviors that are often only perpetuated by a small subset of employees. It is much more effective to say ‘Our organization is a great place to work. Here’s how we respect and support each other so that we can all do our very best.’ This action-oriented message engages and empowers all employees to create a safe and respectful workplace culture,” concluded Buelow.

Other witnesses included: David Bowman, Morgan Lewis; Mary Gentile, Giving Voice to Values/ University of Virginia, Darden School of Business; Christine Porath, Georgetown University, McDonough School of Business; Alejandra Valles & Veronica Giron, Service Employees International Union West and Ya Basta Campaign; Anne Wallestad, Boardsource.
