Announced during ISTE’s annual conference, ISTE CEO Richard Calcutta urged educators to challenge the idea of digital citizenship as solely teaching students what not to do.
“You can’t practice not doing something,” he said. “We need to evolve is our thinking around recognizing the skills required to thrive as a digital citizen go far beyond just online safety.”
For this reason, DigCitCommit is built upon five core competencies – inclusive, informed, engaged, balanced, alert – all designed to shift the conversation of digital citizenship from one focused on the “don’ts” to instead empower students to make informed, proactive choices.
EVERFI’s refreshed digital literacy curriculum, Ignition: Digital Wellness & Safety offers a platform for students to practice these competencies and build their skills, at no cost to teachers and schools.
Ignition leverages a digital learn-by-doing approach where students help characters make smart choices as they experience the online world through the characters’ eyes:
- Inclusive: Ignition Lesson 1 – Connections and Community
- Informed: Lesson 6 – Evaluating Content
- Engaged: Lesson 5 – Rights and Literacy
- Balanced: Lesson 3 – Screen Time Vs. Offline Time
- Alert: Lesson 2 – Safety and Privacy and Lesson 4 – Technology and Data
