MENTAL WELLNESS BASICS OVERVIEW

Like our physical health, our mental health can be strengthened or diminished through daily habits. Mental Wellness Basics is a mental health awareness training course that introduces middle and high school students to mental health education. Stigma associated with mental health can have serious and negative impacts on help-seeking behaviors, and many mental health conditions and symptoms can be significantly lessened through prevention.

What does this mental wellness basics course cover?

Placing importance on mental health education in schools leads to less stigma and improves the overall mental health of students. As such, the mental wellness activitiesand lessons in this digital program focus on:

  1. Supporting students in identifying threats to mental health early, and taking measures to increase factors that protect mental health.
  2. Introducing students to the experiences of others in order to develop awareness and empathy, reduce stigma, and provide facts on the prevalence and symptoms of mental health conditions.
  3. Fostering a mental health mindset to help students develop feelings of self-efficacy and skills that promote and model advocacy for self and others.

Lesson 1

Mental Health Basics

Students come to understand the impacts that stress, the brain, and environments can have on mental health. Students also learn that mental health is fostered through the choices we make, including our ability to notice when our mental health is at risk.

Lesson 2

Understanding Mental Disorders

Students are introduced to common mental health disorders and the accompanying symptoms. Students also explore the concept of balancing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, the choices that may help in reducing the severity of symptoms, and certain areas of the brain and their functions.

Lesson 3

Healthy Coping Skills

Students are equipped with strategies to cope with emotions, thoughts, and behaviors that may impact one’s mental wellness. They are introduced to the ways thoughts, behaviors, and emotions positively and negatively influence each other and get the chance to practice coping strategies and identify and alter negative thoughts.

Lesson 4

Getting Help

Students learn to identify when either a peer or they themselves need help with their mental health, how to get help, and what to expect when seeking treatment. Students address stigma as a hurdle to seeking treatment and learn stigma-fighting techniques.
