Why Financial Literacy Matters in Education
With over half of all states mandating that students learn personal finance prior to graduation, it’s no wonder that over one million students are using at least one of EVERFI’s sixteen free financial literacy resources to meet their state’s standards.
Before high schoolers ever start learning about the intricacies of crypto, filing their taxes, or financing higher education, they first need a solid understanding of foundational concepts like budgeting, banking, and debt.
That’s why over 4,000 schools have made our foundational financial literacy resource the most used resource so far this school year.
Students that have completed EVERFI – Financial Literacy experienced an average learning gain 28%. They also gained confidence in their ability to complete financial tasks. For example, 20% more students reported feeling prepared to figure out their take-home pay from a paycheck after completing the course.
More and more districts are expanding financial literacy education to middle and elementary schools. A review of national data and state standards show why:
- The average high school student scores a 60% on pre-assessments covering basic personal finance topics
- By the age of 12, students possess an economic understanding that experts describe as “essentially adult”
- Personal finance topics such as wants, needs, and budgeting are included in state K-8 standards.
This expansion into the lower grades will surely build more financially literate students and adults.
“Financial literacy is an important life skill that EVERFI is providing our students free of cost. Every high school student in America needs to be exposed to this course. I am so glad my students have an opportunity to learn this valuable life skill through EVERFI.” – High School Teacher, GA

Effective Cyber Safety Programs
School districts across the country are increasingly prioritizing digital wellness and safety education to ensure students develop healthy relationships with technology. Many districts are implementing comprehensive digital citizenship programs that cover topics such as online safety, responsible social media use, and cyberbullying prevention. These programs often include interactive lessons, workshops, and resources designed to help students understand the impact of their digital footprint and make informed decisions online.
In addition to digital citizenship education, school districts are adopting policies and initiatives to promote overall digital well-being.
This includes teaching students about screen time management, the importance of maintaining a balance between online and offline activities, and strategies for protecting their mental health in a digital world. Some districts are also incorporating digital wellness into their broader health and wellness curricula, ensuring that students receive a holistic education that addresses both physical and digital health.
To support these efforts, many school districts are using EVERFI’s free Digital Wellness & Safety resource.
Comprised of six, 25-minute lessons, Ignition allows students to learn critical skills needed to safely and confidently navigate the digital world through scenario-based activities. Typically used in CTE classes, a large portion of schools have all of their students take Ignition at the beginning of each semester as a Tier 1 intervention in their MTSS framework.
Students that completed Ignition – Digital Wellness & Safety in the first semester experienced an average learning gain of 27%. It’s also shifting students’ attitudes and behaviors. For example, 51% more students who completed the course reported that they are likely to speak with an adult about a problem that they are facing online as opposed to handling it on their own.
“[EVERFI] has been a game changer for us and our main intervention for student discipline infractions.” – District Administrator, Irvine Unified School District, CA
The Importance of Career-Connected Learning
Career-connected learning is increasingly recognized as a vital component of K-12 education. It helps students link what they learn in school to real-world jobs, making their education more relevant and exciting. By exploring different careers and gaining practical skills, students are better prepared for the workforce.
This approach not only boosts their motivation but also equips them with the tools they need to thrive in a fast-changing job market.
EVERFI’s Keys To Your Future resource is a standout example of career-connected learning.
The most popular resource in our Workforce Readiness suite, this digital resource helps high school students build essential career and college readiness skills, like goal setting, the college admissions process and durable skills like time management. Teachers across the country used Keys To Your Future with over 120,000 students in the first semester to help them make informed decisions about their education and career paths, setting them up for success.
Students who completed Keys To Your Future last semester saw an average learning gain of 23% and reported seeing a clear connection between what they learned and its impact on their future. For example, 81% of students that completed the course agree that it helped them see how their interests & skills relate to future careers.

Building Future-Ready Skills Through STEM Education
STEM education is vitally important in schools today because it gives students the skills they need for the future. By diving into STEM, students learn to think critically, solve problems, and analyze data—skills that are useful in any job. Plus, STEM education sparks creativity and innovation, encouraging kids to explore and experiment. The National Science Foundation says a strong STEM foundation is key for the nation’s success and competitiveness.
It’s no wonder that EVERFI’s free Endeavor STEM Careers Exploration resource is becoming a favorite in schools because it makes STEM learning fun and interactive.
This program lets middle school students get hands-on with activities that show how STEM concepts apply in the real world. For instance, students can design prototypes, analyze data, and explore fields like software development and game design.
By linking classroom lessons with practical experiences, Endeavor helps students see how STEM is relevant in everyday life and gets them excited about STEM careers.
Students who completed Endeavor experienced an average learning gain of 31%. Thanks to the personalized interests and skills assessment at the beginning of the course and the highlighted careers aligned with each lesson, 52% of students that completed Endeavor reported that it increased their interest in STEM careers.
